To marry in Denmark, you must both be at least 18 years old and unmarried. If either of you has been married previously, that marriage must have ended before you can enter into a new marriage. Marriage between close relatives is not permitted.

If one of you is under guardianship, the guardian must consent to the marriage.

You must submit an application to either your home municipality or the municipality where you wish to be married.

  • If you share a residence abroad, you must include a proof of residence or other documentation confirming this. The document must be attached in both the original language and translated into Danish, English, or German.
  • If you have one or more children together, you must attach your children's birth certificates. The document must be attached in both the original language and translated into Danish, English, or German.
  • If you have previously been married, you must include documentation showing that the marriage ended due to divorce, death, or annulment. This could be an image/copy of a divorce decree, a death certificate, or an annulment decree.
  • The documents must be attached in both the original language and translated into Danish, English, or German.
  • The documents may need to be legalized or bear an apostille.
